Guttering first became prevalent in the UK when the Romans occupied around 43AD, as a means of to protect structures and also water collection for recycling into drinking and bathing water.
But it wasn’t until the Normans invaded that the first use of the downpipe was recorded on the Tower of London in 1240, to protect the white washed walls.
The largest scaffold ever erected was for the Eden Project in Cornwall, England 1998. In order to support this huge project, using approximately 46,000 scaffold poles, which would stretch 230 miles if it was laid end to end on the ground. We won't be building any towers that big!
